Pride and Prejudice at a Glance

Pride and Prejudice novel is written by Jane Austen in 1813. The genre of the novel is Comedy of Manners. The tone ofthe novel is comic, or in Jane Austen's words " Light and Bright, and Sparkling."

The novel is women centric. Eluzabeth and Jane are total five sisters. 
All are unmarried. And their mother was worried about their marriages. In their town Mr. Bingley became rich person and in his party Jane the eldest sister came close to Bingley. Elizabeth tried to dance with Mr. Darcy, Bingley's friend, but he denied rudely. So from there the dispute between both continued. Lydia the yongest one escaped with Wickham who was an army man. But the family accepted so they returned and got married. At last Bingley's reality revealed that he is really very kind and honest person, Elizabeth returned to him. Two couples got married at last: Elizabeth - Darcy and Bingley - Jane. 

Significance of the title:

Both Elizabeth and Darcy display Pride and Prejudice accordingly. Human nature is particularly full with Pride. Pride prevents characters from seeing the truth behind the situation. It is the barrier in the way of union between Elizabeth and Darcy. 
Both's excessive Pride lead them towards their Prejudice. But finally they find happiness by helping each other and overcome their Pride and Prejudice. 

Themes of the novel:

Numerous themes can be identified throughout the novel. Like, Family, Women, Class, Virtue, Individual vs. Society etc. 

Family:
- portrayed as intellectual and moral education of children
- young characters get benefit or suffer from their family values. 

Women:
- gender injustices of 19th century presented here
- women marry for financial security
- women are as capable and intelligent as males
- women has right to remain independent until she meets the right person 

Individual vs  Society:
- society is involved in the private lives of individuals
- characters' responsibility to the world around them
- Elizabeth was independent and individualistic
- her individualistic nature misleads her as she works through her feelings for Darcy
- Austen believes that society has a crucial role in promoting virtue in individual
