Studying Verginia Woolf's 'To The Lighthouse'

Virginia Woolf has written one of the finest novel To The Lighthouse in 1927. Its a part of our study. As we study the novel, we found too much controversies. Because today's world and people's lifestyle and the most important thing, the position of woman is different in today's world. In this novel she has focused on two ladies characters; Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe.

Here I am going to discuss some of the main topics of this novel. (To see the real study task click here.)

'What' a writer wants to say?
  • The writer has used Stream of Consciousness technique to give her thoughts a material structure.
  • She has described the complexity of human relations in her novel.
  • How we are forced to live as per the rules of society.
  • Relations are also artificial.
  • The complexity which is seen in real life, is having a shape by the writer's ability to write words without any reference.
  •  Mostly she has stressed upon the freedom of thoughts of a woman artist. Whose voice is suppressed by saying that
Mr. Tansley whispering in her ear, "Women can't
    paint, women can't write ..."

  • She has given a voice to a woman who is artist and her art is not heartily accepted by the family.
Mrs. Ramsay: An ideal woman or a fool?
  • Mrs. Ramsay is a house wife.
  • She full-fills all the expectations of family members.
  • In the contrast Lily Briscoe's character is stressed more. Who is not married or not even caring how society will think about her.
  • Mrs. Ramsay's place is limited.
    "Closed doors, open windows"
  • Yet she thinks that she has a greater role than Lily.
  • So she is ideal in a her own sense but not really.
  • Text is satirizing upon the minds of woman treatment and portrayal.
The Light House stands for what?

  • Generally Light house shows the direction to the lost one in sea.
  • It is the symbol of hope.
  •  Here Mrs. Ramsay herself seems to be a Light House who gives support to her family members and never breaks down.
  • Narrator herself is not any where present. But has expressed her views very well with the help of her characters.
Fairy tale 'Fisherman and his wife', why is it here?
  • In this fairy tale wife is a very greedy person. Demanding more and more from a magic fish.
  • Here Mrs. Ramsay is constantly denying to go to the light house excusing that weather is not good.
  • It also suggests that women's desire and willfulness is more dangerous than the male's. But it seems that the real danger is there in a male's need of self-assertion and for insisting on internal truth.
  • It also indicating that how a Mrs. Ramsay telling a story to her children which is a harmful myth.
Thank You
